Football Tournament Workouts on Your Terms: Heath Martin’s Training Story

As the football tournament captivates fans around the globe, YESOUL celebrates not just the tournament, but the stories behind the athletes who inspire us. This season, YESOUL has partnered with five football professionals—Heath Martin, Damon Almazan, Archie Watts, Roberto Burlew, and Rolf Feltscher—to showcase how dedication, consistency, and training “on your terms” can inspire anyone, on or off the pitch. Each athlete shares their unique approach to staying active, balancing personal goals, and building routines that fit their lives, inviting fans to discover their own “way” of moving.

Heath Martin: Balancing Football, Entrepreneurship, and Life

Heath Martin, USL League One Champion, entrepreneur, and founder of NSP Soccer, has always approached fitness with intentionality. Growing up in Knoxville, TN, he trained at IMG Academy, played in the academies of Atlanta United and DC United, and later signed four professional contracts. In 2025, he won the USL1 regular season with his hometown club, One Knoxville SC. Even after retiring from professional football, Heath maintains a disciplined mindset focused on consistent improvement in all aspects of life.

Heath trains four days a week, blending strength work, sprint sessions, and cardio. Night workouts have become his preferred routine. “I love the night owl vibes,” he explains. “Running near the beach at night or training in an empty gym allows me to lock in without distractions.” Music fuels his sessions—hip hop, rap, and upbeat house tracks help him stay energized.

Overcoming Setbacks

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Heath faced consecutive setbacks, being cut from multiple teams. Most would have quit, but he persisted. “I wanted to succeed really badly—like, REALLY badly. There was no other choice,” he recalls. His story highlights that mental fortitude is as critical as physical skill: early mornings, late nights, constant critique, soreness, uncertainty, and pressure from fans and coaches alike. Success isn’t only talent—it’s the daily commitment to show up, even when no one is watching.

Training on His Own Terms

For Heath, moving on his own terms means full autonomy. “I work out when, how, and however I want,” he explains. “It’s not about a coach’s approval or anyone else’s expectations. That freedom is what keeps me consistent.” He emphasizes that consistency matters more than perfection, and that the ultimate goal is health and longevity—not accolades. As Heath puts it: “Own your workout. Own you.”

Heath’s routine reflects this philosophy: even short sessions of 10–20 minutes, early mornings, late nights, or brief workouts while the rest of the house sleeps are enough to maintain fitness. This flexible approach allows him to balance training with his entrepreneurial ventures while staying physically active.

Lessons from the Football Tournament

While fans watch the football tournament unfold, Heath’s story reminds us that the principles behind elite performance—discipline, resilience, and consistency—are accessible to everyone. Even a 20-minute session done consistently can have more impact than occasional high-intensity workouts. By applying these habits, fans can embrace the football tournament spirit off the pitch: staying active, pursuing personal goals, and showing up for themselves.

Heath maintains a highly consistent training routine, doing cardio daily. He trains on his own, with others, and goes for runs, often listening to music to keep energized, enjoying hip hop, rap, and inspirational house tracks. Currently, he trains four days a week, focusing on strength and sprinting while balancing his work running multiple companies. Night workouts have become his favorite, allowing him to lock in without distractions, whether running along the beach or in an empty gym in Miami.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Heath faced consecutive setbacks, being cut from multiple teams, but he persisted because he was determined to succeed and had no other choice. He emphasizes that training on his own terms is a gift—not a punishment—and that health is the ultimate goal. Consistency, he believes, matters more than perfection. He advises that showing up regularly, even when it feels awkward or uncomfortable, is the key to long-term progress. Heath moves nonstop, always pushing forward, keeping focused on continuous improvement and maintaining both physical and mental fitness.

Takeaway

Heath Martin demonstrates that the athlete mindset isn’t reserved for professionals. Everyone can move on their own terms—finding time for consistent exercise amidst a busy schedule, embracing setbacks as lessons, and committing to their own journey. During this football season, YESOUL celebrates not only the sport but also the personal victories that come from dedication, resilience, and training your way.
